about

Andrej Jerman "Jerry" is the most successful downhill skier in the history of Slovenia. In 2006/2007 season he won his and Slovenia’s first downhill World Cup in Garmisch Partenkirchen, Germany.

He was born in a small town of Tržič on 30th of September, 1978, where he still lives. He made his first real turns on skis when he was three years old in a nearby ski area (Zelenica). At age six he joined local ski club and is it's member ever since.

Coaches found out very early in his career, that he has got a lot of talent. At age ten and eleven he already equally competed with two years older racers. Even in those days he was known as uncompromising racer and a hard worker that is 100% dedicated to reach his goals, a virtue that is very much needed to become successful athlete.

All of the above attributes helped him to overcome injuries and at the time incomprehensible attitude of ski federation towards downhill racers. His first major setback of his career came at age 13, when he broke both of his shins. At the end of junior years he won silver medal at World Junior Championships in SG. At that time he was already a member of national downhill team (team that specializes for speed events). Next year he blew out an ACL for the first time when he crashed at the legendary Hahnenkamm Race (Kitzbuhel). After that he had up and down seasons. When he had been regularly finished World Cup races in Top 30, another major knee injury cut off his career. All together he had three knee reconstructions and one complicated wrist fracture. In between those injuries (after grueling and time consuming comebacks) he managed to qualify and made the Olympic team for two Olympics (Salt Lake City, U.S. and Torin, Italy).

His breakthrough season was 2006/2007, when all hard work and dedication finally paid off, and it paid off big time. Before the season he switched ski manufacturer, he went from Rossignol to Stoeckli. And that was a final piece of puzzle on his way to the top. After few top 10 finishes and not as goog as it was expected World Championships in Are, Sweden, he won first of two downhills in Garmisch Partenkirchen, Germany. After the win, many observers, coaches, and journalists still doubted in him. He made them look silly the very next day when he finished second on the same course, nonetheless. He finished season as 6th overall in downhill standings even though he missed season finale due to shoulder injury.
